Skittles are a big supporter of LGBTQ. They produce a limited edition package which is all-gray packaging. The candy inside is also gray.
Although the candy is without the rainbow colors, it will still have all of the original flavors. These flavors are strawberry, orange, grape, lemon, and green apple.
Skittles are known for their iconic rainbow and they are ditching this for pride month. This is in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
The company remove the color from the packaging for the month of June and write on it that ‘only #OneRainbow matters’.
When Can I Get These Limited Edition Skittles?
The gray “pride pack” of skittles will be available in stores for pride month. Pride month is during June.
Are The Flavors The Same?
Don’t worry! Even though the skittles will not have their normal colors, the flavors will remain the same.
While you won’t know which favors are which, you will still have the same delicious flavors that are so indicative of skittles.
The rainbow-less skittles are new to the US. They were first sold here in 2020. However, this version of the brand has been released in the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada previously.
Why Do Skittles Do This?
For the launch of the rainbow-less skittles in the US, the brand paired up with an LGBTQ+ charity.
The group that they paired up with is called GLAAD. For every pack of skittles that is sold during pride month, 1 dollar will be donated to this charity up to the value of $100,000.
This is great and will provide a lot for the community.
This is the first time that a brand has partnered with GLAAD like this.
Last year, Bud Light did a similar thing where they sold rainbow-colored bottles in bars. 1 dollar was donated from each case that was sold.
The president of GLAAD explained why skittles were doing this. She stated that skittles is removing the rainbow in order to promote conversations about the LGBTQ+ community.
They are also doing so to take a stand of solidarity with the community.
It is very important for large brands to do this, as it spreads awareness and it highlights the support that is growing for the community.
What Is GLAAD?
GLAAD stands for Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. GLAAD is very important in LGBTQ acceptance.
They are a big media force and they tackle issues faced by the community and they provoke discussions about the LGBTQ community and their struggles.
They promote discussions about cultural change as they advocate for a world in which everyone can live how they want to.
Before the 1980s, the LGBTQ representation in the media was hard to come by. Most representations of LGBTQ people were homophobic and problematic.
GLAAD was founded in 1985 and since then, things have started to get better for the community.
GLAAD was formed in the1980s when the HIV epidemic was causing havoc in the communities.
In 1985, activists banded together to do something about the problem and GLAAD was formed.
They pressured the media and helped to reduce sensationalism and use more neutral terms.
The company strives for better representation of LGBTQ+ in the media and they have made huge differences in this way over the years.
Why Is Pride Month In June?
Every June, pride is celebrated across the world in full force. This June marks 51 years since the Stonewall uprising of June 1969.
This happened in New York City and it was the start of the modern gay rights movement. Most pride events happen in June because of this.
This month allows everyone from the LGBTQ+ community to come together and celebrate the freedom that they have to be themselves.
Skittles wants to promote the LGBTQ+ community and they are giving up their rainbow to raise awareness.
They also have a long-term partnership with GLAAD, not just during the month of June.
June is a great opportunity for people to come together to support the minority community who have suffered so much over the years and celebrate them.
Other Brands Who Support LGBTQ+ Community
Over the years, there have been lots of brands that support and celebrate pride month.
Having the support of big brands is very important in raising awareness and money for the community.
This year, there are lots of retailers who have released LGBTQ+ collections and are showing support for the community.
Many beauty brands, fashion brands, and lifestyle brands have done so this year.
They have created lots of pride products that support different pride organizations.
Fabletics have launched a pride collection called “United in Pride”. They have done so in partnership with GLAAD – similar to skittles.
They have designed this collection with lots of bright colors and prints. They are also donating 25,000 dollars to GLAAD.
Bombas have created a great pride collection which includes socks, slippers, tops and underwear.
They are going to donate an item to someone in need through organizations like The Ally Coalition for every item purchased from the pride collection.
Converse offers a personalisation service. They have laces, an all star patch and other things that are inspired by LGBTQ+.
You can also opt for a unity flag on your shoe. The brand also shares 50 personal journeys on their website which are detailed in creative and inspiring ways.
Abercrombie And Fitch
Abercrombie teams up with the Trevor Project to release a capsule collection.
This adult collection is available in lots of sizes and includes T-shirts, sandals and more. They also are planning to donate $400,000.
Skittles support LGBTQ+ in a large way. Endorsements like these from big companies help the cause in big ways.
While the money that they donate to charities such as GLAAD is very useful, they are also doing very important work in raising awareness.
People seeing that big companies like skittles are supporting the LGBTQ+ community is very useful.
They are using their voice and platform to promote LGBTQ+ needs.
